Much is yet to come

Free Space Gallery has been incredibly busy in recent weeks and we have lots more planned for the summer months, there is only a chance for  brief summary so please do read on below.

Down to EarthDown to Earth is our current show by artist in residence Sally Buchanan. Sally has created site specific pieces across the building tracing through mixed media and stitch unseen energies which flow through the building. She has captured unseen particles and recreated natural phenomena such as the Northern Lights. On 9th of June we welcomed friends, family and the curious on site to see her work. It was a wonderful evening of lively chatter. The work will be up until 8th July so do please come and have a look.

Mental Spaghetti Workshop series – Throughout May we were working with Mental Spaghetti to run a series of unconventional drawing classes with people learning to draw with inks and watered down bleach as well as doing Matisse style paper cut outs. We are pleased to announce that we will be working with Mental Spaghetti again on Friday afternoons between 2 – 5pm throughout August and into September. The theme of this series will be print. And if you do want to come be ready for the unexpected.

Paint Action Method – As I write our Paint Action Method workshop day two is going on and participants are out on an art protest with their hand painted placards with phrases about wellbeing and selfcare. It has been wonderful to see the building filled with movement and colour and this is something that we would like to run again so if you are intrigued please do keep your eyes peeled.

Six Sense Garden – Our Six Sense Garden which is entering its third week is a wonderful project encompassing art, horticulture, DIY and wellbeing. Each week we work in the garden, which we are planting and building and then learn about plants and create our own work on this theme. Each week has seen a great deal of discussion about the natural world and our role in it. It is wonderful to be part of this community. Please do get in touch if you would like more details.

Alternative Photography Taster – Unfortunately our Alternative Photography Taster sessions run by Catriona Grey were on rainy days, but this did not stop us venturing out into the garden collecting samples and exposing photos in the rain with our beautiful flowers and leaves creating ghostly outlines.

Creativity & Wellbeing Week – This week we are hosting two talks as part of Creativity and Wellbeing Week and there is still a chance to book a free place. The first is this evening and will consider Nature on prescription and the role that art can have to bring nature into clinical envrionement, this will take place in the GYM room on the ground floor between 6 – 7.30pm. On Thursday 16th from 7 – 9pm we will be hosting a talk on mental health and art – this wonderful evening will feature four artists as they explore their work  Paloma TenderoAntonia AttwoodCeline Marchbank and Rhona Eve Clews

Moodlab – We still have two places available on our next MoodLab class which begins on Wednesday 22nd June, this four week course will see you track your moods and emotions through creative means and then create work as a result of these moodboards. Please do get in touch to book a place and to find out more.
